Self-Compassion: Seriously?! (EP 72: The Vegan Life Coach Podcast)

Ever feel like rolling your eyes when someone talks about the importance of self-compassion?

Oftentimes if we’re giving in to junk foods, overeating, skipping our workouts, we think we need a kick in the butt, not compassion!

In this enlightening episode, we discuss the benefits of self-compassion, the consequences of not showing yourself compassion, and strategies for embodying self-compassion.

It’s easy to be good to ourselves on those days when we are on top of the world.  Self-esteem flying high. Life is rolling and beautiful.

But let’s face it…those are moments, not the way life is all the time.

Self-compassion is treating ourselves with kindness and empathy in our not so beautiful moments.

Kristen Neff, the leading researcher in the field of self-compassion, says there are three components:

  1. Self-Kindness: Being kind and understanding towards ourselves.  Instead of allowing our inner critic to run amok, speaking to ourselves in a loving way, as we would a friend.
  2. Feeling of Common Humanity: Recognizing that everyone makes mistakes, no one is without weakness. Understanding our humanity is accepting that we are not alone.
  3. Mindfulness: Being in the moment, becoming mindful of the now allows us to not become engulfed by our troubles, difficulties, or anxiety. It allows us to put things into perspective.

Here are some strategies…

  1. Ask yourself:  “What do I need right now?”  Sometimes we aren’t very good at answering this question for ourselves in those moments of difficulty, so in that case, take it outside of yourself and…
  2. Ask yourself:  What would I say to my best friend in this situation, and HOW would I say it?  We often offer more warmth and kindness to others than we do for ourselves.  When we are in need, we need to offer that same warmth and kindness to ourselves.
  3. Invest in yourself according to your needs.  Sometimes that means an afternoon away in nature or two weeks off from work.  At other times, that means really allowing yourself to take a very big step and do what needs to be done for your well-being and health.

Monk grew up fatherless and had a very poor upbringing, eventually falling into a life of substance abuse and crime.

After hitting rock bottom he turned to meditation and transformed his entire life to that of service.

Now 13 years sober and living a completely different life, he works with others to help facilitate their healing through his coaching.

His new, powerful book is Love Over Fear: A Guide to Peace and Purpose. He is working to get it into health and wellness centers, schools, halfway houses, and correctional facilities where it can make a massive impact.

A Refreshing Approach to an Age-Old Practice with Day Christensen (EP 67: The Vegan Life Coach Podcast)

In this fascinating episode, we cover a lot of ground. Day shares her insights into valuable topics like the divergence of veganism and yoga and the healing power of fruit, and she does so with such passion and plenty of humor!

Get ready to fall in love with Day on Episode 67 of The Vegan Life Coach Podcast!

——–

More About Day:

Drawn to the elusive peacefulness and glow that so many yoga practitioners seemed to have while connecting with yogic philosophy, Day Christensen took up the practice of yoga in 2004.

Starting out, she took classes that fit her schedule, but quickly became drawn to the Mysore style practice of Ashtanga yoga, where students were taught in a relatively silent room with one on one instruction. There, in this environment, she recognized that the student’s potential for growth super-ceeded what she had experienced in other styles of yoga that utilized the more typical “guided” method of teaching.

It was then that she began to schedule around her yoga practice, and her life of late nights and unhealthy habits did a 180.

After immersing herself in Ashtanga and the Mysore method, taking trips to Mysore, India to study where the practice was born within the lineage of those who created it, on her third trip to India, Day was given the blessing to teach as an Authorized Level 2 teacher.

However, shortly after that time, suffering from persistent back pain, Day found that the system with its hierarchy of postures and repetitive movements could actually be more harmful than helpful. Through the process and years of learning to heal and recover from back pain, Day finally was able to break free of the cookie-cutter method of giving all students the same sequences of postures meant to be learned and repeated 6 days a week, sometimes for years and years on end with no variation in asanas or movement patterns.

With this new perspective due to her own pain caused by repetitive movement, she recognized that the system of learning yoga asanas can be improved: groups of asanas should be given according to each student’s current and developing postural needs.

“The how” being the Mysore Method of one on one instruction where each person in the room is able to work according to their own needs, ability, and pace, was and is the most effective way to learn and grow. But “the what” of specific series and order of postures MUST be re-assessed. Thus, The DAY1YOGA Method was born: A tailored and customizable practice, minus posture- or series-hierarchy, (zero delineation between “advanced” and “beginner” students), just students, people with issues, all there for the healing and strengthening modality that yoga should be

Diet Hell (EP 66: The Vegan Life Coach Podcast)

If you’ve ever said something like this to yourself, you’re far from alone.

In fact, almost every client we have ever worked with has this fear. 80% of people who diet gain all the weight back, so it’s a legitimate fear!

In Episode 66 of The Vegan Life Coach Podcast, we dive deep into the reasons why dieting sabotages your weight loss efforts.

Here’s a summary of those reasons:

  • Engaging in unsustainable practices of counting calories and macros
  • Feeling restricted leads to self-sabotage
  • Relying on your willpower to make healthy choices
  • Fighting your body & ignore its signals, which fosters an untrusting, unhealthy relationship
  • Failing to address the mental/emotional factors causing you to overeat/eat for reasons other than to nourish and fuel your body

If you want LONG-TERM results, but are scared of failing yet again, it’s important to explore the fear, because it has the potential to push you to give up before finding the answers you need to succeed.

Buckle up as we help you uncover hidden fears, and help you discover how to use them to your advantage by utilizing the Self-Empowerment Coaching System!

Acceptance vs Resistance (EP 64: The Vegan Life Coach Podcast)

In this insightful episode, we answer the questions many people have when we say, “Accepting your body as it is right now is a prerequisite for transforming it…”

LISTEN/WATCH

Subscribe: Apple Podcast | Stitcher | Spotify |  YouTube

*Links mentioned in the episode are at the bottom of this page.

“How can I accept something I want to change?”

“If I accept my body as it is, how will I ever lose weight?”

We’re talking about resistance vs acceptance, and how making this powerful shift is key for achieving all of your personal and professional goals and dreams.

Carl Yung said, “We must ACCEPT what we want to change.” We’re telling you why and showing you HOW in episode 64 of the Vegan Life Coach Podcast!

Show Notes:

  • Defining Resistance: The refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument
    • When we resist, we are firmly holding to what we want the truth to be. It is arguing with reality. When we spend our energy wishing something was different, we are wasting our time…wasting that energy.
      • Examples:
        • Hitting the snooze button
        • Comparing yourself to others, wishing you had their legs,          personality, money, etc.
        • Getting angry about the traffic jam making you late for work
        • Worrying about things that are out of your control
        • Ignoring or distracting from negative emotions (eg a Netflix binge with a pint of coconut milk ice cream)
    • Resistance doesn’t change reality; It only makes it harder.
    • Humans are built for resistance. Our bodies and minds love homeostasis. So, overriding that can be difficult and is likely why we keep ourselves in that state, even though it causes us so much suffering. If I could choose a superpower, it would be Acceptance because it is simple but NOT easy.
  • Defining Acceptance:  Act of taking or receiving something offered; willingness to tolerate a difficult or unpleasant situation.
    • What acceptance is NOT:
      • Giving Up
      • Condoning
      • Liking or Enjoying
    • What acceptance is:
      • Active: It is a practice. It is a choice to allow reality to flow.
      • Understanding that reality just is and that there is a way through it if you don’t like it.
      • An important part of mindfulness:  The mind is fully engaged in what is, what is happening, and what we are doing and moving through without judgment of ourselves or the situation.
    • Why is acceptance important in the change process?
      • Carl Jung: We must ACCEPT what we want to change.
      • Accepting reality allows us to look at it honestly and make a plan based on reality and NOT on what we wish reality was.
      • Acceptance empowers us to make the next move.
    • How do we move from resistance to acceptance?
      • “Accept then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you’ve chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.” –Eckhart Tolle
      • Ask yourself some questions:
        • What is the impact of resistance in this situation?
        • Am I engaging in the behaviour of resistance?  Arguing with reality: Wishing, worrying, comparing, refusing
        • Am I feeling the resistance through my emotions?  Anger, resentment, anxiety
        • What if I act as if I chose this situation?  How would that change things for me?
        • How would this change if I allowed reality to be exactly what it is in this moment?
      • Practical Strategies:
        • Take a pause when you find yourself engaged in resistance:  Compassion and Curiosity
        • Self-Empowerment Coaching system with a desired outcome of acceptance
        • Journaling
        • Mantra:  I accept reality as it is.  Resistance is futile.  I can only change what I accept.
